Certification: Gluten-Free
Does your retailer require GFCO by name, or do you run a restaurant or kitchen? Then V-Cert is not the right fit. See who this is for

What a gluten-free certificate does for your product
Gluten-free certification turns a label claim into a document your buyer can check.
A claim with a number behind it
“Gluten-free” without a stated threshold is a promise nobody can verify. The threshold applied to your products is recorded on your certificate, and any buyer can check the certificate by its number or QR code.
Built for how smaller producers work
Shared lines, shared kitchens and co-packers are normal at small and mid-size scale. The review reads your scheduling, cleaning validation and testing cadence as one file. Sharing a line changes the controls we look for, not your eligibility.
Runs on documents you mostly already have
The review asks for documents you mostly already have: supplier specifications and your last validated gluten test. If a document is missing, the reviewer names it and the clock pauses; a missing document does not end the review.
Remote review as standard
The standard review is remote. There is no on-site audit unless your quote states one.
How the gluten-free review is controlled
Your test reports, read by a reviewer
V-Cert does not run lab tests itself. You provide gluten test reports from a validated method, no older than 12 months, and the reviewer reads them with the rest of your file.
Requirements set out before you start
The requirements for this mark are set out on this page, so you see what the review will ask for before you send a document.
A named contact, a committee decision
A named contact at V-Cert handles your file end to end. The certification decision is made by a certification committee.
A certificate anyone can check
Every certificate carries its own number and a QR code. Your buyer can check it on the V-Cert verification portal with no account, and the check returns the certificate's current status.
Plain about accreditation
V-Cert is an independent certification body and is not ISO/IEC 17065 accredited. What each mark requires and the rules for granting, suspending and withdrawing certificates are published, and every certificate is verifiable by QR code.

Gluten-free certification requirements
What the reviewer checks before a certificate is issued.
- Finished product tested below 20 ppm gluten, the threshold recorded on your certificate
- Gluten test reports from a validated method, no older than 12 months
- Cross-contact risk assessment for shared lines and facilities
- Ingredient-level review of starches, excipients and botanical sources
- Threshold standard printed on the certificate face
Core documents to prepare
- Formulations
- Supplier specifications and declarations
- A cross-contact risk assessment
- Gluten test reports from a validated method
- Cleaning validation and testing schedule, where lines are shared
Your reviewer confirms the full list for your scope.
Where gluten-free claims usually fail
- Wheat-derived starches and maltodextrin in excipients, fillers and flow agents
- Botanicals bought through brokers, in herbal blends and powders
- Shared lines and facilities in co-packed and small-scale production
- Hydrolyzed wheat protein and grain derivatives in cosmetics, under INCI names
- Oat ingredients without a declared sourcing protocol
The gluten-free certification process
Request and approve your quote
Tell us what you make. No documents at this stage. Your quote comes back scoped to your products, with its payment terms, and nothing is payable until you approve it in writing.
Send your documents
Once you approve the quote, you send the file: formulations, supplier declarations and the evidence listed in the requirements above.
Desk review
A reviewer reads every document against the requirements for the mark. Gaps pause the clock, they do not end the review — you get the name of the missing document, not a rejection.
Decision and certificate
The certification decision is made by a certification committee. A pass issues your certificate and the mark artwork in four formats. A shortfall is written up with exactly what is missing, and your file stays open.
Verify and renew
Your certificate carries its own number and a QR code that anyone can check, with no account. Certificates run for 12 months and are renewed annually.
Typical timeline: digital certificate within 7 business days of a complete application and documentation, for standard scopes. If your scope needs physical verification, it gets its own written timeline up front. Business days are Monday to Friday.
Get My QuoteAdding another mark to the same review
Supplement labels often carry gluten-free beside vegan and non-GMO. The specifications and declarations already in your file cover most of all three claims, and marks reviewed together are quoted as one annual fee. Mention it under the optional details in the form.
Is V-Cert gluten-free certification right for you?
V-Cert may be a fit if…
- You make supplements or cosmetics and need a credible gluten-free claim
- You are a small or mid-size food producer selling direct, online or to independent retail
- You export, and your buyers want a certificate they can check by QR code
- You use a co-packer that will share its specifications, cross-contact controls and current test results
V-Cert is not the right fit if…
- Your retailer or buyer mandates GFCO, or another program, by name
- Your contract requires an on-site audit scheme
- You run a restaurant, hotel kitchen or food-service site, or you make pet food, medicines or packaging. This mark is not built for those
- You expect lab testing to be part of the standard review. V-Cert reads the test reports you provide and does not run tests itself
Not sure which side you are on? Add a line under the optional details in the form. A V-Cert certificate does not guarantee acceptance by any retailer. If your buyer requires a specific program by name, or an on-site audit scheme, we tell you before you pay anything.
Questions about gluten-free certification
Is V-Cert accepted where a retailer requires GFCO?
Some retail programs mandate GFCO by name. If yours does, that requirement decides, and V-Cert is not a substitute. Send us your buyer's requirement and we will answer plainly. A V-Cert certificate does not guarantee acceptance by any retailer.
What gluten threshold does V-Cert certify against?
Below 20 ppm gluten, the limit used in the FDA gluten-free labeling rule. The threshold applied to your products is recorded on your certificate. Where an export market requires a different recognized threshold, the certificate says so explicitly.
What documents do we need for gluten-free certification?
Formulations, supplier declarations, a cross-contact risk assessment, and gluten test reports from a validated method. Shared lines change the controls we look for, not your eligibility. Your reviewer confirms the full list for your scope.
Do you test our products?
No. V-Cert does not run lab tests itself. You provide gluten test reports from a validated method, no older than 12 months, and the reviewer reads them with the rest of your file. If your scope needs further testing, it is agreed and quoted in advance.
Can a restaurant, hotel kitchen or food-service operation be certified?
No. V-Cert does not certify restaurant or hotel kitchens. The risk in a kitchen is operational and renewed every shift, which calls for an on-site program rather than a document review. Packaged products made in a shared kitchen are a different case: they can be certified with a documented cross-contact risk assessment and controls.
We use a co-packer. Can our products still be certified?
Yes, provided the co-packer will evidence the claim: its own specifications, its cross-contact controls and current finished-product test results. You do not need to own the facility or hold the recipe.
How do we get gluten-free certified?
Request a quote, approve it, and send your documents. A reviewer works through the file remotely, a certification committee makes the decision, and a pass issues a numbered certificate. The steps are set out in the process section above.
What does gluten-free certification cost?
There is no public price list. Your quote is one annual fee, scoped to the marks you choose, what you make, and the number of products and production sites. Requesting a quote costs nothing and carries no obligation. Nothing is payable until you approve the quote in writing, and the payment terms are set out in the quote. Quotes are issued in US dollars.
How long does gluten-free certification take?
Typical timeline: digital certificate within 7 business days of a complete application and documentation, for standard scopes. The clock starts when your application and documents are complete. If something is missing, the reviewer names it and the clock pauses until it arrives. If your scope needs physical verification, it gets its own written timeline up front.
Is the review remote, or do you visit our site?
The standard review is remote: a reviewer reads your documents, formulations and supplier declarations. There is no on-site audit unless your quote states one. If your buyer's contract requires an on-site audit scheme, V-Cert is not the right fit, and we tell you at the quote stage, before you pay anything.
Does requesting a quote mean we are certified?
No. A quote request is not a certification. Certification is granted only after your complete file has been reviewed and the certification decision has been made. If the file falls short, you get a written list of exactly what is missing.
How long is the certificate valid?
Certificates run for 12 months and are renewed annually. Renewal is the same annual fee stated in your quote, re-confirmed each year for the same scope.
Is V-Cert accredited?
V-Cert is an independent certification body and is not ISO/IEC 17065 accredited. What each mark requires and the rules for granting, suspending and withdrawing certificates are published, and every certificate is verifiable by QR code.
Where is V-Cert based, and which countries do you work with?
Headquartered in New York. Certifying manufacturers worldwide — remote desk review in any time zone.
